Picture Think Baroque abundance meets contemporary food art!
This exhibition will coincide with the Brewery’s October 2025 artwalk. The Brewery Lofts are home to over 500 working artists, drawing over 10K visitors to each artwalk. The gallery will be open to the public during artwalk hours and by appointment.

For the past 18 months, Kolaj Institute has investigated the intersection of photography and collage through a series of exhibitions and artist residencies in partnership with the New Orleans Photo Alliance. This research has been guided by the idea, “The mediums of collage and photography are bound together in an ongoing dialogue. The photographer makes pictures of the world. The collagist remixes those pictures to tell a story about the world we live in. What happens when the photographer begins collaging their own work? What happens when the collage artist picks up the camera?” We found artists engaged in a variety of techniques and approaches: collage as process; making art with family archives and found photographs; using alternative processes like cyanotypes and Gelli print transfers; and challenging how we think about images in a world flooded with them. In doing this, the artists invited viewers to consider questions of identity and gender; family and memory; the materiality of photography; and history and artist process.
The Photography & Collage Virtual Artist Residency will invite photographers and collage artists to come together in dialogue, learn from one another, and make artwork for a series of exhibitions that explore the intersection of collage and photography. Unfolding in two tracks over the course of a month, we will ask, What happens when a collagist picks up the camera? What happens when a photographer collages their pictures? Presentations will explore collage in theory, artist practice, the ecosystem of art, the state of photography, and the history of photography and collage. Artists will shoot with their own camera, in whatever process they choose (film & develop or digital & print), and then make collage with the photographs they make.
During the residency, artists will make an artwork that will be exhibited at Kolaj Institute’s Gallery. The exhibition will take place in December 2025 as part of PhotoNOLA 2025, an annual celebration of photography in New Orleans, produced by the New Orleans Photo Alliance in partnership with museums, galleries, and alternative venues citywide.
The residency is led by Dafna Steinberg, MFA, adjunct professor of darkroom photography at Delaware County Community College, and Lance Rothstein, a photojournalist and street artist who operates the darkroom and teaches photography and collage workshops at the Morean Art Center in Saint Petersburg, Florida. The project is being curated by Ric Kasini Kadour, Director of Kolaj Institute and a 2020-2021 Curatorial Fellow of The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, and produced in partnership with the New Orleans Photo Alliance.
WHO IS THIS FOR?
The residency is intended for artists with a practice of collage and/or photography who want to explore the intersections of the two mediums. Residencies are open to any artist over the age of 21 from anywhere in the world.
COST
The cost of the residency is $500 per artist. Kolaj Institute has a limited number of grants available to offset the cost of the residency for those in need. These grants are possible through the generous support of our donors.

Collage in Practice Workshop
A four-week, virtual/online workshop with Kolaj Institute
Next Session: Sundays, 20 July-10 August 2025, 2-4PM EDT
Submissions are considered on a rolling basis.
The practice of collage takes on many forms. A practice will be shaped by the goals of the artist and what they want to achieve with their artwork, how they want to diffuse their artwork in the broader ecosystem of art. It will also be informed by the choice of material, scale, and subject matter. A collage practice is also informed by the history of artists who came before and how an artist chooses to be in dialogue or opposition with their creative ancestors. A working understanding of one’s practice is critical to one’s professional and artistic development.
Intended as a clinic for working artists at any level, participants in this workshop will explore how they go about making art and putting it out into the world. How to set goals and manage one’s practice towards those goals. How to get your work seen. How to get an exhibition. How to create and maintain an inventory. How to identify and think about artist ancestors and how they influence our artwork. These are some of the challenges artists face when they want to take their art practice to the next level. Together, we will explore the difference between art as a hobby, profession, or vocation.
Participants will explore critical concepts and collage taxonomies as a way to develop and refine the language they use to talk about their own practice and to develop a broad view of the creative landscape in which they operate. How does choice of material inform how the artwork is exhibited? How does one speak about their process so that it is understood by other art professionals and the general public? How can one use art history to create a critical context for one’s artwork? Topics include Collage Theory; Sourcing Materials, Copyright, Appropriation; Developing Materials; and Collage in Presentation.
OUTCOME
Participants will finish the workshop with a deeper understanding of their practice; a strong statement of practice that can be used to communicate with curators, editors, and art professionals; a portfolio of consistent artwork (or a plan to make one); and tools for growing or developing their practice.
Collage in Practice is part of Kolaj Institute’s Artist Development Program, a collection of three core workshops for self-motivated artists, at any stage in their career, who want to develop and expand their collage-based artist practice and work towards professional goals, particularly in the areas of exhibitions and publishing.

Collage on Screen Artist Residency 2025
Deadline to Apply: Sunday, 20 July 2025
Final Deadline to Apply: Sunday, 10 August 2025
Collage in Motion is a project of Kolaj Institute that explores collage and the moving image, a broad, loosely defined category that includes animations, film cut-ups, collage film, stop-motion, animated GIFs, documentaries about collage artists, and other forms of media in which collage–as medium or genre–is present. We see our role as not one of defining “collage in motion” but as one of asking what “collage in motion” can be. The project manifests as articles in Kolaj Magazine, an online directory, workshops, residencies, and screenings. Artists with practice of Collage in Motion are encouraged to submit to the online directory.
Collage on Screen Artist Residency is a five-week program designed to support artists who want to develop a practice that includes motion in their artmaking. In five virtual meetings over five weeks and through ongoing, online discussion, we will explore the history of collage on screen and the various ways that collage makes its way to the screen and how collage artists operate in the space of moving images and sound. Unlike two-dimensional art, collage on screen is temporal art, meaning it moves through time. Because of this, viewers experience Collage on Screen not as a linear series of images but as an immersive experience. This residency asks, How do we, as collage artists, make artwork that speaks to that?
Designed for collage artists, professional development sessions focus on artist practice, how to develop a story; and how to develop moving images and sound to tell that story.
Residents will make a 30 second film that will be considered for Collage on Screen at Kolaj Fest New Orleans, 10-14 June 2026. If selected, the film will be included in Kolaj Institute’s traveling screening program. Artists may also choose to make longer works which will also be considered.
WHO IS THIS FOR?
This residency seeks to bring together a diverse group of artists who are passionate about exploring the intersections of collage and film and want to develop their art practice to include this medium. We welcome all skill levels, however, those new to this medium should be prepared to develop the technical skills needed to complete the residency. This may include video editing, sound editing, digital image editing. Faculty will provide some technical support in the form of three, one-hour tech clinics during the week after the first meeting. During the residency, artists will develop new skills by learning from one another and sharing knowledge. Artists will add artistic craft to their practice, new tools for their toolbox, and an understanding of how to wield those tools effectively, even if the tools themselves are still being developed.
COST
The cost of the residency is $600 per artist; however, no artist will be turned away for lack of funds and the organizers will work with artists to build a financial aid package.
Artists will use their own technology and depending on their approach, may need to purchase appropriate software or use free software that is available.
