Call for Artists — Cardboard City
reDiscover Center seeks proposals from artists and makers working in the Los Angeles area for inclusion in Cardboard City, a 2 month temporary exhibition and creative arts space on the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica, to create cardboard-based art. There are two options for participating artists:
• Exhibiting Artworks
• 4 Day Artist Residency
Cardboard City seeks to inspire visiting families to participate in art making and explore the connections between creativity and sustainability. Artists whose work deals with themes related to reuse, environment, sustainability, and STEM are particularly encouraged to apply. Artists currently working in other media are welcome to apply and take on the challenge of using cardboard as a medium.
EXHIBITING ARTIST:
The cardboard-based work will be exhibited July 8-August 29, with an option to include in the art auction at the Cardboard City Gala on August 26. Artist is responsible to transport and, if unsold, pick up of work. In very limited circumstances, reDiscover can arrange for transportation, upon request.
ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE:
Residency project will take place Thursday-Sunday during public hours, 12:00-6:00 PM. Multi-week residency proposals will be considered.
We seek artists who are interested in sharing their work for the public’s benefit, particularly inspiring diverse youth. This could include: sharing messages for social / environmental benefit, utilizing public contribution to work, or incorporating public feedback into an ongoing conversation among the artist, the artwork, and the public.
An honorarium of $500 and use of the facility for a final exhibit/presentation is offered to the successful applicants.
The artists will have access to the tools and cardboard at the Cardboard City space. Additional tools may be available (let us know what you have in mind!)
All resident artists working in Cardboard City during public hours are strongly encouraged to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before the start of their residency. Upon acceptance, artists are required to enter into a signed program agreement and attend a safety training. Safety first.
Cardboard City offers artists:
• Visibility to as many as 100,000 visitors and potentially 1 million+ online and onlooker views
• Space for resident artists to work on site and access to a wide range of types of cardboard and various cardboard cutting and forming tools
• Convenient location. Located three blocks from the Expo line with easy alley access and adjacent parking.
• Volunteer assistants and potentially thousands of community members contributing to collective artworks
ELIGIBILITY and SELECTION PROCESS
The residency is open to all artists, artisans and makers who reside or exhibit in Los Angeles County. Artist teams will be considered; partnerships and groups should apply through one coordinating member. All forms of artistic production will be considered in application but the residency focus is cardboard.
All eligible applications are evaluated by a panel of arts professionals, which rates and selects the final awardees according the following criteria:
• Quality of previous work
• Exhibiting Artist: Applicants submission
• Resident Artist: Applicant’s proposed plan for the residency period
• Suitability of the artist’s practice for the space.
Notification of the selected resident will take place the week of June 14, 2021. Installation of exhibited artworks will take place between June 14 and July 7, 2021.

Kolaj LIVE Milwaukee is a weekend festival and symposium July 30th to August 1st, 2021 at Saint Kate—The Arts Hotel in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Our mission is to create a platform that allows us to explore critical issues around collage: how it is curated and presented, its role in contemporary art, and the tensions between collage as a medium, a genre, a community, and a movement. Our goal is to create an event that attracts a variety of people working in various capacities, such as art professionals at museums, galleries, and centers as well as academics, writers, and artists. Kolaj LIVE Milwaukee plays a key role in the work of Kolaj Magazine and Kolaj Institute, as it is a way for us to become familiar with a professional’s work. Presenters may be invited to participate in future projects. Responding to the Call is how you tell us that you would like to take on a presenting role at Kolaj LIVE Milwaukee.
The program at Kolaj LIVE Milwaukee will be a unique experience. Our aim is to break down hierarchy and foster dialogue among art professionals working in a variety of capacities. To that end, the editorial staff of the magazine works with presenters to craft a program.
A presenting role can mean many different things: presenting your topic or art practice on a panel, leading a discussion on a topic important to collage, or conducting a special project during the event.
Most presenters present short slide shows about a project or their practice followed by a Q&A with the audience. We are particularly interested in: historical perspective, art world economics, the role collage has played in an artist’s practice (particularly when their final work isn’t collage per se); mash up culture; the relationship between contemporary art and society; museum issues; surveys of how collage was presented in exhibition; collections where collage plays a central role; the role of collage in various art movements (Modernism, Surrealism, Pop Art, etc.); utopian and dystopian imagery in art; art’s role in the current political moment and, in particular, how art responds to sexism and racism; notions of power in the art world and its impact on collage. We are particularly interested in one’s experience as an artist: making art, showing art, selling art, identifying as an artist or a collagist, how the artist participates both in an art community and in society in general. We are interested in artists open to sharing how they navigate the art world. And we are interested in various approaches and strategies for collage making. This is by no means an exhaustive list.
IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION: Only apply to be a presenter if you plan on attending Kolaj LIVE Milwaukee in person. If you answer No to the question, “If accepted, will you attend Kolaj LIVE Milwaukee, July 30th to August 1st, 2021?”, your submission will not be reviewed and will be rejected. Presenters are responsible for their own travel to, accommodations at, and registration for the event. Limited resources are available to assist those presenters in need and only after their presentation submission has been accepted. Small Works Exhibition 2021
The eighth annual national juried exhibition of small works (12 inches or smaller in any direction*) is open to artists working in all media. This exhibition is open to all U.S. residents. A total of $2,000 in cash awards, best in show receives $1,000! *Framing may extend to 16 inches.

International Art Competition Botanicals
Contemporary Art Room Gallery is proud to announce their 3rd “Botanicals” Online Art Competition for the month of July 2021. This is an international competition and artists from around the world are welcome to submit their work. The Botanicals theme may include any work with interpretation of botanical and floral art (flowers, herbs, fruit, leaves, plants and related floral subcjects). All visual art mediums are acceptable (painting, photography, drawing, sculpture, digital, prints, fiber art, collage or installation art) except sound and video art. All winning artists will receive a digital award certificate. First, second and third place will be largely displayed with an article about the artist and their work. First place will be on the poster of the show. $15 for 2 images of artwork. Deadline: June 24, 2021.
Figurative 2021 | International Online Juried Painting Competition
Open to all artists 18 years and older. All painting mediums allowed including drawing mediums and digital painting. (For this competition, digital and drawing mediums are categorized as a “painting”.) Artwork must be representational and clearly depict a human art form as a real life image. The artwork may be any style, including abstracted shapes, however, a human form(s) must be present in the painting. A “Full Body” image is not required, however, it should not be a portrait of just the face. We are sorry, we know quite a few “figurative pieces” are nudes, however, CB’s Policy is No Nudity – private parts must be covered.
This is a competition, only the award recipients will be in the online group exhibition. The selection of artwork will be chosen by Jury based on the number of entries, technical skill, quality of work, originality and the criteria for this event. Please allow up to 3 weeks after the deadline for review and preparation for the online show.
