This contest is open to California residents in grades K-12. Entry Deadline: January 29, 2026, 5:00pm (PST). Immediate family members of Coastal Commission staff are not eligible. Entries should be individual work, not group projects. There are five grade categories for awards in both art and poetry: K-1, 2-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12. Entries must have a California coastal or ocean theme (for example, no tropical or arctic settings or species). Art does not need to depict specific places or species, but if it does, they must be California places and species. Meaning, sometimes a fish is just a “fish,” but if it’s a recognizable type of fish, make sure it’s one that lives here! (Learn about California native species.) And while you can submit a poem about “the beach,” please don’t submit one about Waikiki Beach, for example. Winners will be selected for art and poetry in each of the five grade categories; winners will receive a $100 gift certificate to an art supply store (art), courtesy of BLICK Art Materials, or a bookstore (poetry), and tickets to Aquarium of the Pacific, courtesy of the Aquarium. Each winner’s teacher (named on the Entry Form) will receive a $50 gift certificate for educational supplies from Acorn Naturalists. In addition, multiple honorable mentions may be selected. Please visit our webpage for more contest guidelines and how to enter.

Open Call – V I D E O S O U N D A R C H I V E – S15
V I D E O S O U N D A R C H I V E Season 15 –Calling for video and sound works that reconsiders the current restructures and parameters. Rather than a festival or exhibition, we are carving out a space to encourage a literal pause in life and ‘mindful use of this easily accessible medium’ by underscoring critical thought and creation. Leaning away from social media and insta- “content creation” (vanity metrics) we hope to allow a straightforward space without the unnecessary pressure of views/likes. Ideated on January 13, 2020, we are both artists working in this medium. Our hope is to build a network to foster connections, and create a place for your work to exist in a broader conversation — a pure art exchange to experiment and express without buzz words, vanity metrics and artspeak.
- Please submit works with a maximum running time of ten (10) minutes.
- Please submit works that include both your original video and sound in the same piece. If you are not the sole creator of the video and/or sound, please include all collaborators, and/or list public domain/open source.
- Please read over our FAQ before submitting.
To be considered for S15, please submit by December 31, 2025 11:59pm PT

“Children” International Open Call to Artists and Writers—Deadline January 31, 2026
The artist’s and writer’s call for the ArtAscent Art & Literature Journal CHILDREN issue is now open.
Children illuminate our world in ways that inspire and energize. They embody a wide range of emotions and possibilities, where laughter signifies joy and tears represent personal growth and transformation. We cherish their presence through play, learning, storytelling, artwork, and discovery. They symbolize hope and potential, bursting with curiosity and imagination. However, the essence of childhood is complex; its fragility can evoke concerns about safety, the loss of innocence, and the pressures of adulthood. Explore your perception of CHILDREN in a literal, abstract, whimsical, or uniquely personal way.
ArtAscent is a theme-based publication and online exhibition that showcases artists and writers from around the world practising a broad range of skills, including painting, illustration, photography, mixed media, ceramics, sculpture, textile, jewelry, printmaking, digital graphics, fashion, film, video, installation, performance, story writing and poetry writing.
ArtAscent provides the opportunity for the voices and visions of writers and artists to be shared in a professional and accessible platform. Artists and writers are published in our online exhibition for at least two years.
In addition, ArtAscent may also select your work for inclusion in the ArtAscent magazine. ArtAscent presents up to 100 high-level designed pages printed on premium-quality paper. This magazine issue is curated editorial content with no outside commercial ads. Up to 40 selected artists and writers will be published in our print and digital magazine, as well as receive a free digital copy of the magazine. Four will also receive a feature section with a profile written about them. All magazine artists and writers are showcased to art lovers through our social media and print and digital issues.
Applications may include all art mediums that can be represented in 2D and written explorations of up to 1,800 words. We love diversity. Submissions must be the original work of the applicant(s). Creatives featured in the past can apply again with other works not previously published in ArtAscent. HOW TO APPLY: Apply using the online application form on our website. Application fees help cover costs such as design, writing, administration and artist promotion. NOTIFICATION: Notification is made by email to subscribers of the ArtAscent newsletter.
