What is progress? On what ethical and moral basis does man undertake the evolutionary path that determines his being in the world, his relationship with the environment and with his fellow men? On what foundations and through what purposes does man undertake his scientific research? What are the outcomes and testimonies that have contributed to a qualitative improvement in human life? What are the outcomes and testimonies of the errors committed, and that man continues to commit?
Although in a continuous re-evaluation and alteration of behavioral orientation, and in response to his own needs and necessities, man creates that linear evolutionary path that leaves traces of himself and from which it is possible to detect the most intrinsic nature of him.
This call asks these and further questions. These are open questions to which authors engaged in the various digital media respond by addressing the issue in various humanistic and scientific areas.

L.A. Photo Curator -‘The “I” – A Call for Self Portraiture’ curated by Ellen Friedlander
“For however dutifully we record what we see around us, the common denominator of all we see is always, transparently, shamelessly, the implacable ‘I.’”
~ Joan Didion
By turning the camera onto ourselves we are able to share the most intimate examination of the human condition. Perceptions of reality are shaped by personal experiences.
At what point does inner turmoil and emotion bubble over into everyday life?
Is a self-portrait a depiction of what one feels, one’s self concept or one’s desire to be seen? Examine the role of “I” without any preconceived notions of what a self portrait should be.
20% of artist entry fees go to charity.
10% of artist entry fees goes to the curator’s choice of charity. Friedlander has chosen The Creation District. The Creation District is an incubator and a safe haven for creation, discovery, activism, daring, and dream-making for Sacramento’s youth and young adults.
Another 10% goes to the first place winner’s choice of charity.
Ellen Friedlander is a Los Angeles-based fine-art and documentary artist who uses a variety of in-camera and post processing techniques to reveal the unpredictable, idiosyncratic, inscrutable nature of the human condition.
Friedlander is an Advisor for Pasadena Photography Artsfor which she curates and hosts for Open Show/Pasadena/East LA.
(Pasadena Photography Arts (PPA) promotes diverse photography projects and panel discussions around the photographic medium by established and emerging photographers worldwide through Open Show and FORUM virtual events.)

Paradigm of modernity, since the first half of the 20th century, photography has become a means through which authors such as Florence Henri, Man Ray, László Moholy-Nagy, and many others, offer new visions of reality: all this is done by observing, analyzing and asking questions on several levels, such as a scientific, cultural, and social one, regarding objects / subjects, but also regarding the role and the deepest meaning of the photographic act.
Thanks to the advent of the digital world, its applications and its operational transversality, new techniques, procedures and conceptual approaches to the “writing of light” are today in continuous evolution. Contemporary experimental photography proposes new languages and new aesthetics concerning the experience of man in the relationship with the environment and its perception.
