GALLERY REGISTRAR
One of the longest established contemporary art galleries on the West Coast, L.A. Louver is seeking a full-time Registrar to join our team. Our ideal candidate will have two to five years of experience with a fine art gallery, shipping company, or arts institution, and an excellent understanding of professional best practices.
The Registrar will need to be a strong team player, working closely with the Director of Operations and Facilities and gallery preparators to organize shipping, framing, and conservation; maintain and update the inventory database; and liaise with gallery colleagues, artists, clients, and vendors.
This colleague must be extremely detail oriented by nature, a clear and gracious communicator, capable of working well under deadline pressures, and have good professional judgment.
Responsibilities may include:
· Initiate and monitor incoming and outgoing shipments (both domestic and international), communicating with shipping vendors to obtain estimates and manage pickup, transportation, and endpoint delivery of artworks.
· Track and manage artwork movements, consignments and loan agreements
· Ensure artwork inventory database records remain correct and updated, prioritizing artwork details, images, location, condition, framing and production costs, as well as provenance and exhibition history entries, working closely with Archive.
· General collections management, including condition reporting, cataloguing, and tracking of artworks across multiple locations, including on- and off-site storage, artist studios and exhibition loans
· Oversee basic art handling and preparation duties; assist as needed with packing and unpacking, installation
Desired Skills and Experience:
· Bachelor’s degree in related discipline preferred
· Minimum two years registration and/or collections management experience in a gallery or art institution
· Proficiency and experience with art inventory / collections management database (familiarity with ArtBase is ideal)
· Proficiency with Mac OS X environment, MS Office Suite; Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Acrobat Pro) a plus
· Knowledge of art handling, art storage, and transportation best practices
· Must be able to lift 30+ lbs
· Must have valid CA driver’s license, as position may require working out of multiple locations
This is a full-time (Monday-Friday), salaried staff position with benefits, including medical and dental insurance, paid vacation and sick leave, and 401(k).
Salary range: $60,000 – $80,000, commensurate with experience.

REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL | “UNTWISTED: Inside Out In”
Side Street Projects (SSP) is requesting proposals for our upcoming 2023-24 Artist Residencies titled, UNTWISTED: Inside Out In. These residencies are offered to two (2) artists or collectives to develop a community-engaged art project that creates peaceful spaces for intergenerational connection and the conditions for collective healing, with a Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) approach. The residency will take place between November 2023 and June 2024 based on the availability of applicants.
The UNTWISTED: Inside Out In residencies are available for artists interested in developing socially engaged projects in connection to the communities SSP serves. Projects should aim to honor process over product and make space for regeneration, deep listening, and peer-to-peer mentorship. This residency UNTWISTED: Inside Out In could serve as an incubation space for a larger project, as some projects continue beyond the scope of the residency.
This project is funded by the Pasadena Community Foundation and is intended to serve folks who reside in or have a meaningful connection to the City of Pasadena and Altadena. SSP maintains a range of community partners who can potentially inform and collaborate with the projects. We honor our relationships and partners as precious resources. An Affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution and AAM accredited, the Japanese American National Museum (www.janm.org) is recognized as one of the nation’s premier cultural museums. JANM is located in the historic Little Tokyo/Arts district in downtown Los Angeles, conveniently located at the Little Tokyo stop for the Metro light rail line A & E station.
The Gallery Attendant for the temporary exhibition, Aki’s Market provides Museum visitors with access to the technical and hands-on experiences connected to the exhibition. Experiences are located in the Weingart Gallery or other designated spaces. Oversees the use of Virtual Reality gallery experience for Aki’s Market. Sets up equipment, assist visitor and cleans equipment between use. Provides information to the visitor about the exhibition and helps maintain the exhibition. Requires flexible scheduling of hours and days of work, requires some evening and weekend hours with availability for approximately 12 to 18 hours a week. Must be available for two to three days per week: 11:00am to 4:00pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 1:00pm to 7:00pm Thursdays and 11:00am to 5:00pm Saturday and Sundays. Temporary position from August 2023 through January 28,2024.
Bachelor’s degree in art, museum studies or history preferred; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum one year of experience in engaging visitors in a museum setting and/or experience in leading group tours in a museum setting. Previous Gallery attendant experience is preferred. Demonstrated ability to show sensitivity to audiences with diverse backgrounds. Experience in providing customer service in a public setting. Demonstrate commitment and flexibility at all times in order to ensure high quality of service. Knowledge of Japanese American history and culture a plus. Has excellent communication and negotiation skills. Experience working with VR headsets, databases, Google Calendar and care use of equipment; experienced using IPad/smart phones preferred. The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) is seeking highly motivated and experienced Art
Associates for the Barnsdall Arts Center (BAC) to ensure safe, secure, healthy and well-run facilities for the
instructors and students; assists students and instructors; and maintains equipment, glazes and fires kilns as
needed.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The BAC is seeking a ceramic laboratory technician to provide ongoing support in operating our kilns and
maintaining our ceramic studio/ laboratory, beginning in early 2024. This is an ideal position for a friendly,
energetic, caring, professional, and responsible Ceramic Laboratory Technician with a minimum of 5 years’
experience maintaining a ceramic studio/ laboratory and a passion for contributing to a safe and supportive
learning environment.
RESPONSIBILITIES included but are not limited to
● Assist in operation and maintenance of a ceramics studio/laboratory: perfom specialized and technical
duties to ensure efficient and safe operation; set up classroom/laboratory and equipment for instructors.
● Assist teachers and students in the proper and safe use of a variety of equipment, materials, and supplies
in the instructional setting; provide assistance to students as appropriate, assigned or according to
established procedures.
● Formulate and test clays and glazes; fire and maintain kilns; operate and maintain a wide variety of
specialized equipment including but not limited to mixers, wheels, and hand and power tools.
● In charge of loading, firing, and unloading the kilns (gas and electric)
● Order, receive and store supplies, materials, and equipment; maintain inventories, to assure appropriate
quantities are available for instructional use for each session
● Adjust, maintain, calibrate, and perform minor repair to equipment; report major repair needs or arrange
for repairs according to established procedures
● Maintain a ceramics classroom/laboratory environment in a safe, clean and orderly condition
● Prepare and maintain various records and reports related to classroom/laboratory operations and activities
as required
● Assist in the scheduling of the use of the ceramics classroom/laboratory equipment and supplies
● While working closely with education coordinator, create and maintain a public firing schedule for all
ceramic classes
● Provide information and assistance to students and staff in the ceramics subject area
● Safely operate, maintain, and demonstrate the use of specialized equipment, materials, and supplies
● Maintain kiln shelves and kiln furniture.
● Follow safety requirements and follow appropriate safety precautions in the storage, handling and
disposing of hazardous materials.
● Manage the recycling of clay
● Research best practices and new technological innovations in the field
● Make recommendations to the staff on the ordering of equipment and supplies
QUALIFICATIONS
● Bachelor’s degree preferred; or equivalent combination of education and experience
● Minimum 5 years operating Kilns experience.
● Technical expertise in the physical handling of ceramics studio equipment both Electric & Gas Kiln
● In-depth knowledge of the handbuilding, throwing and firing ceramic process and glazing techniques
● Knowledge of ceramics history and contemporary practitioners in the field.
● Requires ability to work effectively and cooperatively with administrators, faculty, staff, students and
vendors, and demonstrated sensitivity to and respect for working with a diverse population.
● Excellent oral and written communication
● Strong management and organizational skills.
● Familiarity with Google Suite preferred
● Ability to problem-solve effectively.
● Must have valid California Driver’s license with reliable form of transportation
