Interdisciplinary
Call to Artists: Poetry & Collage Residency
A four-week, virtual/online residencywith Kolaj Institute in March 2022
Deadline to apply: Wednesday, February 2, 2022
It says something that in the Poetry Foundation’s Glossary of Poetic Terms, “collage” is one of the few visual art terms they define. Perhaps this is because so many poets have also been collage artists. In recent years, we’ve seen exhibitions from John Ashbery and Marc Strand, whose collage “dates back to his student days at Yale in the 1950s where he studied with Josef Albers, the renowned Bauhaus artist and color theorist, and also Bernard Chaet.” Arthur Solway recalled, “Though we were eight thousand miles apart we would have weekly Skype calls, and he was always eager and excited to show me the latest batch of collages he was working on.” A 2017 book of Helen Adam’s collages, which fellow poet Robert Duncan referred to as “pleasing weird”, has sold out. Keith Waldrop, Barbara Guest, John Wieners, Norma Cole, the list is long.
This project-driven residency is open to artists and poets. Participants will work together to investigate the intersection of collage and poetry by exploring concepts of found poetry, blackout poetry, collage poems, haikus, centos, response collages, response poems, word scrambles, concrete poetry, scatter collage poems, and other poems and artwork that inhabit this world. Together we will create working definitions and document techniques.
Guest speakers will share their practice, knowledge and experience. Portland, Oregon-based Kevin Sampsell is an editor, publisher, bookstore employee, collage artist, and author. His forthcoming book of collage art and poems, I Made an Accident, is being published by Clash Books. Renée Reizman is an interdisciplinary curator, artist and writer specializing in social practice and civic engagement. Her workshop, “Deconstructing Legalese”, uses found poetry to examine contracts and codes imposed upon us by bureaucratic systems, and reconstructs the language to reclaim our personal histories. Rod T. Boyer creates art and poetry under the moniker our thomas, exploring themes of redemption, mystery, and transformation. In Kolaj #32, his article, “Mind the Gap,” explored how collage and haiku share similar mechanisms of juxtaposition and disjunction.
In several virtual meetings over four weeks (see schedule below) and through ongoing, online discussion, artists will leave the residency with a deeper understanding of the intersection of collage and poetry. Individual participants will each create 3-5 page spreads that will be included in a forthcoming book of collage and poetry from Kolaj Institute. The pages may be entirely text, entirely images, or some combination of the two.
WHO IS THIS FOR?
Collage Artist Residencies are intended for self-motivated writers and artists, at any stage in their career, who want to develop their practice by exploring a topic or working method and collaborating with others to produce a final product. Residencies are open to any artist over the age of 21 from anywhere in the world.
COST
The cost of the residency is $500 per artist; however, no artist will be turned away for lack of funds and the organizers will work with artists to build a financial aid package.

A Day in the Life
It’s 8:30am and you’re entering the office after making your stop to your local coffee shop and completing your weekly COVID test. You’re greeted by your team members and quickly hop onto your computer to review your calendar and jot down important tasks for the day. After confirming the date and time of an upcoming training with a leading education professional you update the Google Calendar invite with the proper Zoom link and shoot the confirmation details via Slack to your manager. Once receiving a “thumbs up” emoji, you begin reviewing the Teaching Artists’ reports and research strategies to support trust building with students. You can’t wait to model these tactics during your virtual planning session and see them applied when doing on-site observations!
It’s time to join the Programs Team for the weekly meeting to review and prepare for the week’s Saturday STEAM and discuss upcoming observations. Whew! After a morning of research, e-mail correspondence, and a weekly meeting, it’s time for lunch. Grab your food and enjoy the delightful outdoor backspace. You update the calendar with the days you’ll be working on-site and from home and add these notes to your report. It’s a beautiful day and you let your manager know that you’d love to meet outside. You grab a glass of water and some chocolates and get ready to take a deep dive into your tasks for the week. Before you head home for the day, you take a quick peek at your calendar and finish up with an email or two. You end your day knowing that you’ve impacted five school districts, over 500 students, and nearly 50 educators!

During the last three months, they will facilitate the collection’s development and management (e.g. preparing materials for the committee’s review, updating inventory, maintaining editorial content, etc.). Fellow-created collection content—images and written descriptions of artworks and artists’ practices, among other materials—will serve as a resource for curators, team members, and advisors in supporting new additions to the online library, creating exhibitions, and more. Selected fellows’ texts will be published on the KADIST website.
Responsibilities
– Produce original content about the practices and artworks of 6-8 selected artists to be shared with KADIST staff in San Francisco and Paris
– Nominate videos or photographs from the selected artists for the KADIST’s art library
– Participate in the organization-wide review process of artworks nominated for its video library
– Help facilitate the management of the collection inventory and logistics
– Lead and oversee production of 3-5 short video content with collection artists for social media

– Knowledge of contemporary artists’ practices, artworks, ideas, and art scenes in either the Americas or Asia
– Fluency in writing concise descriptions of artworks and artist biographies
– Willingness to engage in research practices, spontaneous discussion, and considered argument
– Attention to detail with rigorous administrative and multi-tasking skills
– Ability to work autonomously while being proactive, communicative, and open to feedback
– Fluency in both spoken and written English is mandatory
Position Details
Each fellowship requires a six-month commitment, an average of eight hours a week. Each fellow will receive a stipend of USD 5,000 for the duration of the fellowship. Remote positions with periodic online meetings are negotiable. The fellowship period will begin the week of February 7 or 14, 2022.
One fellowship will focus on researching artists working and living in the Americas while the other will focus on artists working and living in Asia.
Application
For immediate consideration, please send a resume, a short letter of interest (up to 400 words), and 3 writing samples by January 9, 2022 at 11:59 pm PT to jobs@kadist.org. Please indicate “Americas Fellowship” or “Asia Fellowship” in the subject line depending on the fellowship you wish to apply for. A shortlist of finalists will be invited for interviews.
Equal Opportunity
KADIST is an equal opportunity employer. All applicants will receive consideration without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or protected veteran status. Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) are strongly encouraged to apply.
