General Operating Support

Award Amount

$24,000.00

Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, Tuleburg Press will sustain and strengthen its core operations by funding essential staff positions that drive its literary mission. During 2026-2027, a $30,000 award will help offset payroll costs for staff who deliver free and low-cost programming in Stockton, mostly to low-income residents. Tuleburg Press will continue to provide free classes, hands-on art activations at public events where staff bring papermaking and printing press demonstrations into neighborhoods across the region. The organization will partner with Title 1 schools to provide free and low-cost field trips for students who might not otherwise access arts education or engage with the written and book arts. This California Arts Council investment will help Tuleburg Press continue building an equitable and sustainable literary arts presence in the Central Valley.

Organization Summary

Tuleburg Press publishes local authors and mentors emerging writers at The Write Place, the organization’s creative writing and book arts center. We publish 1-3 books a year. Classes and field trips for people of all ages, with specific attention to low-income and marginalized groups, are held in papermaking, bookbinding, letterpress printing, and writing in fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry. We currently serve between 30-40 participants a month. Tuleburg Press collaborates with other organizations to provide these same services to specific groups: the San Joaquin County Office of Education, Community Medical Centers, and San Joaquin County Housing Authority communities are priority partners. We also work with justice-impacted individuals through memoir writing and journal-making workshops in partnership with Friends Outside and the Community Medical Centers Respite Center, supporting healing and self-expression through the literary arts. Tuleburg Press is a stakeholder in the revitalization of the downtown Stockton core and a lead organization on arts advocacy and access in Stockton.
