Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, the Institute for Traditional Studies, can keep our lights on, support our small but dedicated staff, and cover essential costs like utilities and internet. This support also helps us keep our website current and gives us the breathing room to pursue new funding that strengthens the cultural work we do for our community.

Organization Summary

To share and preserve traditional arts, the Institute for Traditional Studies offers theatrical presentations, lectures, seminars, workshops, and exhibitions. We also create and catalog digital archives of music, dance, artwork, and video performances to ensure these cultural materials remain accessible for future generations.
Our board members and teaching artists serve as artistic and technical consultants for schools, community institutions, and other groups, providing instruction in the music, dance, and arts that reflect the diverse cultural heritage of California.
The Institute also administers the Senior Artists In Need (SAIN) Fund, which supports elder artists in our community by helping preserve their musical and written collections, visiting those in nursing homes, providing small comforts, and assisting with funerary expenses when needed.
One of our ongoing programs brings world music and cultural history directly to schools, senior centers, museums, and community spaces. Through live performances and engaging historical content, participants experience global traditions in a way that is personal, educational, and inspiring.
