Founded in 1936 and incorporated as a nonprofit in 1963, the Stockton Art League has been a pillar of San Joaquin County’s arts community for nearly 90 years. In 2001, it established the Elsie May Goodwin Gallery, a venue for exhibitions, events, and arts education.

As a non-juried membership organization, the League hosts monthly exhibitions showcasing local and regional artists, offering affordable display space and community connection.

Core Programs and Community Impact

Youth Art Program (YAP)
Offers low-cost art education for students ages 6–17, led by local teaching artists. Classes explore diverse media and nurture creativity, confidence, and engagement.

Adult & Visiting Artist Workshops
Regional artists lead hands-on workshops accessible to beginners and advanced artists. These workshops build skills and foster mentorship.

Artist Demonstrations
Free and open to the public, this series highlights artists sharing tools, techniques, and ideas, deepening public understanding of artistic practice.

Performances & Special Events
The League hosts interdisciplinary events, including performance art, film screenings, and music-based art nights.

National Juried Exhibition at the Haggin Museum
Co-sponsored with the Haggin Museum, this biennial exhibition features artists from across the U.S. The 61st was held in 2020, with the 62nd in 2024.

Advocacy, Collaboration, and Regional Leadership
The Stockton Art League is an active cultural advocate and State-Local Partner mentee with the California Arts Council, working to expand arts access and infrastructure in San Joaquin County through a three-year mentorship with Amador Arts Council. A 2020 strategic plan, funded by an Organizational Development grant, renewed its focus on advocacy and equity.

In 2021, the League co-produced a community arts symposium with the Stockton Arts Commission, NEA, and regional partners to explore equity, economic development, and the role of the arts in public life.
