Project Description

In-Step Project expands equitable access to dance arts training for youth ages 2–18, including youth from disinvested communities and youth w/disabilities and diverse learning needs. Funds will support teaching artists and program staff to deliver dance arts training, mentorship, rehearsal, and performance opportunities across ballet, contemporary, jazz, and culturally rooted Korean and Latino folk dance. Teaching artists use inclusive, individualized adaptive accommodations. Ongoing communication with families and partners identifies access needs early and inform real-time adjustments to instruction, accommodations, and event design. In-Step will provide scholarships/other cost-offset supports and will strengthen accessibility: all youth can fully participate. Support also covers production for community-facing activities, including open houses, school assemblies, and multiple performances in accessible community settings; covers space/venue needs, costumes/supplies, production coordination, outreach, and transportation for staff and equipment to reach schools and community sites.

Organization Summary

SoCal Arts Dance Theatre’s provides a year-round dance education and creative youth development experiences that increase access to dance arts, strengthen youth development, and build community connection. We combine high-quality instruction, mentorship, and performance opportunities for young people ages 2–18 from disinvested communities and youth with disabilities or diverse learning needs. We use dance as a tool for self-expression, belonging, and leadership development, building confidence, discipline, teamwork, communication skills, and a positive sense of identity.
Our comprehensive curriculum includes classical ballet alongside complementary forms such as contemporary, jazz, Pilates Mat, and acting for theatre and film, as well as culturally rooted Latino traditional dance (this year, we have added Korean). We incorporate youth-relevant contemporary styles (including K-pop–inspired movement) and culturally meaningful themes connected to community celebrations (such as Día de Muertos) into choreography, the creative process, and community performances so youth see themselves reflected and feel connected to place and culture. Instruction is delivered by experienced teaching artists who support a range of learning styles and abilities through inclusive practices and individualized accommodations as needed.
A cornerstone of our work is the In-Step Project, which provides sequenced training, coaching, and mentorship that support both artistic growth and social-emotional development. Youth participate in rehearsals and performances throughout the year, including in-studio showcases, school assemblies, and community outreach events, gaining meaningful opportunities to share work publicly, strengthen community ties, and practice leadership and collaboration.
We create a welcoming entry point for boys and gender-expansive youth to participate in dance through tailored instruction, mentorship, and peer community, reducing stigma and strengthening sustained engagement in arts learning and youth development.
We provide a safe, welcoming space for young and professional artists to collaborate on new dance and art expression projects, including community-based performances and partnerships that expand local access to the arts.
