Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, Sarah Bush Dance Project will sustain its programs, staff, and operations from October 2026 through September 2027, a period that encompasses the company’s 20th anniversary season. Supported programs include the world premiere of PITCH, a site-specific dance-theater work set on softball fields in Oakland and San Francisco in which nine dancers embody Bay Area dyke ancestors, performed in September 2027 as part of SBDP’s Sapphic September celebration; ongoing community engagement through the Sapphic Storytelling Series, Dyke Softball Pickup Series, and Sapphic Book Study of “Wide Open Town”; continued development of the Oakland Dyke HERstory Dance Tour in partnership with the Bay Area Lesbian Archives; contemporary dance classes and workshops; and administrative and production capacity to support the company’s most ambitious programming to date.

Organization Summary

Dance Performance:
Provides dances performances that evoke critical conversations about social justice, equity, environment and place. We produce evening length theater performances and outdoor site-specific dance performances. We produce and present guest artists work in evening length dance shows.

Dance Workshops:
Provides our audiences with learning opportunities related to dance performances where they can engage and participate in learning and creating dances and embodiment practices.

Dance Film:
SBDP creates dance films that evoke critical conversations about social justice, equity, environment and place.

Financial Equity for Artists:
Provide employment opportunities for intergenerational dance artists and interdisciplinary artists with a strong value on financial equity.
