With support from the California Arts Council, SACRA/PROFANA will present its 18th season of year-round artistic and educational programming serving San Diego County. As the region’s only professional choral ensemble with ongoing education initiatives, SACRA/PROFANA presents six concerts annually, provides in-school workshops and its Summer Choral Intensive, collectively serving hundreds of students and community members each year.
Funds will directly support artist compensation, including professional singers, teaching artists, and artistic leadership, ensuring equitable pay and the continued employment of a diverse arts workforce. Funding will also support expanded access to high-quality choral experiences for students in Title I schools and audiences across geographically and economically diverse communities.
Through these efforts, SACRA/PROFANA will advance cultural equity by elevating underrepresented voices in choral music, increasing access to arts education, and strengthening community connections through shared artistic experiences.
Founded in 2009, SACRA/PROFANA is San Diego’s only year-round professional chorus and has been described as “one of San Diego’s prominent vocal groups. Under Artistic Director Juan Carlos Acosta, it has a gift for combining high-level technical singing with community consciousness.” As part of its focus on community service, SACRA/PROFANA provides dynamic Education Outreach Programs that support and enhance music education in the San Diego Unified School District. These include:
• Seminars for high school music students coupled with concerts side-by-side with SACRA/PROFANA’s core professional choir;
• Demonstrations led by SACRA/PROFANA personnel to middle and high school students that include musicianship and vocal technique, and
• A summer program, The Summer Choral Intensive, one of San Diego’s most sought after vocal programs for high school and middle school singers.
