Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, ROOTSTOCK ARTS will establish the groundwork for the RootStock Arts Center, our brick and mortar creative artist development facility in North Oakland. Funds will be dedicated to broader infrastructure needs for the beginning of our journey as an accessible artist community center aimed at supporting local artists in need of space for rehearsal, lessons, and programming. Offsetting monthly rent, utility bills, subscriptions, routine cleaning and maintenance are essential parts of keeping it a viable location for gathering and development. Funds will ensure that our resources remain fixed upon the basic needs for us to achieve long-term sustainability of our artist forward mission. By funding our essential overhead CAC funds allow us to keep our almost 50 annual events staffed and compensated with reliable sound and door personnel.

Organization Summary

In addition to presenting over 70 concerts each year, RootStock Arts offers three core programs year-round:

Monthly Artist Gatherings: RootStock Arts hosts intimate gatherings that bring artists across disciplines together to break bread, share resources and their personal journeys, mentor one another, and build community away from performance. We emphasize sociality as the fulcrum of our artistic endeavors, as opposed to a purely transactional dynamic that places profit over artistic exploration and community building. At RootStock, dedication to local arts initiatives is enough to have a seat at the table.

Weekly Live Music Series: In partnership with WyldFlowr Arts (artist-run venue in Oakland), RootStock Arts presents weekly concerts for musicians to perform their own music without the burden of foregrounding a profit model. Artists decide ticket price, set length, and space use — some record multitrack in front of an audience, others teach workshops. RootStock covers rental, staffing, marketing, accounting, and operations, often with a 90% ticket-sales-to-artists model.

Monthly Indian Classical Showcase: In partnership with Medicine for Nightmares (artist-run bookstore in San Francisco), RootStock Arts curates a showcase featuring four short acts of desi-diasporic expression. By presenting South Asian classical arts in non-traditional venues, we invite multi-generational, immigrant, and culturally mixed audiences into living dialogue between tradition and innovation.

RootStock Arts has additionally started operations from our permanent headquarters. We are expanding our services to include low-barrier access to equipped rooms, facilities and development opportunies. Offerings in the new RootStock Arts Center include a parking lot live music series, rehearsal/practice space, private teaching rooms, listening library and a maker space where artists receive technical training to produce their own merchandise and branded product.
