As community needs have grown, so has Project READ. Originally focused on adult literacy, our programs now include early intervention, youth tutoring, family literacy workshops, dual-intervention programs, and enrichment activities. We recently transitioned to hybrid learning platforms to increase accessibility and remove barriers to participation.

Youth Programs: Project READ serves low-income and learning-challenged K–12 students through one-on-one tutoring with trained community volunteers and teen tutors. These programs strengthen reading and writing while building confidence, leadership, and resilience. Our early intervention programs engage entire families in literacy learning, fostering a culture of reading at home. We also offer enrichment programs, including STEAM and integrated arts that provide creative, hands-on opportunities for exploration and self-expression. In the past year, over 300 youth participated in our programs, with an average reading growth of two full levels.

Intergenerational Impact: Our unique model engages youth, teens, adults, and families together in literacy learning. Teen and preteen tutors gain leadership, mentoring, and professional skills while serving as role models for younger learners. Adults contribute as volunteer tutors, mentors, and advocates, while also benefiting from their own literacy instruction. This intergenerational approach strengthens our community, building confidence, civic engagement, and a shared sense of purpose.
