With support from the California Arts Council, Painted Brain (PB) will sustain accessible arts-based programs, including The Painted Path, peer-led visual art, music, and writing workshops that connect individuals unreached by traditional care systems to community arts services and recovery pathways. Art is our entry point to fostering self-expression, reducing isolation, and embracing historically excluded artists and community members in programming for long-term well-being.
Funding will support general operating expenses, artists and supplies, rent, utilities, and staff salaries. These resources sustain safe and welcoming spaces where creative expression builds trust and connection to mental health services, workforce development, and peer leadership. Ultimately, CAC grant funds will enable our Community Mental Health Center to serve more transitional-age youth and adults navigating mental health challenges, substance use, justice involvement, and systemic barriers through therapeutic arts programming.
Painted Brain is a peer-led behavioral health organization that integrates mental health services, workforce development, advocacy, and social support through an arts-centered model of care. All programming is developed by and for individuals with lived experience, ensuring services are culturally responsive and grounded in the communities we serve. At the core of our approach, art is not a standalone service but the primary way individuals connect, build trust, and engage in healing and care.
Our Community Mental Health Center provides individual and group therapy, case management, peer support, and reentry-focused services through Project New Start. We also offer Enhanced Care Management for Medi-Cal beneficiaries with complex needs, along with supportive services and financial assistance through Department of Mental Health-funded programs. Services are delivered on-site and in community settings to meet individuals where they are.
Participants are supported beyond stabilization through workforce and leadership pathways, including our 80-hour Peer Support Specialist training, peer leadership and advocacy programming, and technical training in digital health literacy and cultural competency. Participants also engage in industrial arts, contributing to the design and production of clothing and community materials.
Arts-based programming is woven throughout all services. Through artist residencies, workshops, and creative workspace opportunities, participants engage in visual art, music, writing, and hands-on production. Through our social enterprise, including The Painted Path, participants build creative and professional skills, with opportunities for leadership development, stipended participation through select programs, and paid roles as available.
Painted Brain serves transitional-age youth and adults navigating mental health challenges, justice involvement, housing instability, and systemic inequities.
