With support from the California Arts Council, Oceánica Ballet will produce “Alicia in the Land of Wonders,” an original story ballet choreographed by Edgar Lepe and Robert Burns Lowman that centers the lived experiences of a first-generation American child of immigrant parents. CAC funds will support choreographers’ and dancers’ compensation for rehearsals and a public performance, music licensing, rehearsal and performance space rental, production documentation, marketing, and community engagement activities. Performances will be held at the College of San Mateo Theatre, a venue with an established relationship with Oceánica Ballet and the Latinx/é community. This work responds directly to the urgent need for Bay Area immigrant communities to see their stories reflected and honored through art.
