Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, the NORTH SHORE SYMPHONY, dba North Coast Symphony, will enhance its outreach and attract a wider audience, including from underserved communities, by promoting and offering engaging musical experiences. General operating support will enhance our ability to provide more audience attendance opportunities, including chamber music performances at libraries, family-friendly concerts in various venues, and engaging with communities to foster inclusivity. Funding will also enable the orchestra to invite diverse professional soloists, providing inspiring opportunities for both our musicians and the audience. Additionally, we plan to elevate our members’ musicianship and to enrich our programming by performing contemporary musical works from a variety of composers. By expanding and diversifying our offerings, we aim to strengthen our role as a cultural asset and create a more vibrant, inclusive musical community.

Organization Summary

The North Coast Symphony Orchestra (NCSO), founded in Encinitas over 75 years ago, is a cornerstone of the North County San Diego arts community. As a volunteer-based community orchestra, NCSO is committed to making high-quality orchestral music accessible, affordable, and relevant to a broad and diverse audience.

We present a full concert season each year, offering engaging, family-friendly performances that span classical masterworks, pops favorites, and works by underrepresented composers, including women and people of color. These thoughtfully curated programs reflect our dedication to cultural inclusivity and musical diversity.

To ensure accessibility, NCSO performs in a variety of community-based venues such as libraries, churches, retirement homes, community centers, and shopping malls—removing traditional barriers to the performing arts. We maintain one of the most affordable ticket pricing models in the region: general admission is $15, with discounted $12 tickets for seniors, students, and military members, and free admission for children.

NCSO also actively engages with the broader community through outreach. We have performed at senior living facilities and collaborated with local choruses and other musical groups to create inclusive, intergenerational experiences. For example, in 2025 and 2026 we partnered with North Coast Singers, a group of young singers who have not had the opportunity to perform with a live orchestra. We performed a free family concert that was promoted to local schools to reach underserved communities. The orchestra also did an outreach performance at a local senior community. These partnerships deepen community connections and broaden the reach of our programming.

By prioritizing affordability, community partnerships, inclusive repertoire, and accessible venues, the North Coast Symphony Orchestra serves as both a cultural asset and a gathering point for the community. We remain committed to enriching lives through the shared experience of live music, fostering connection, creativity, and joy across the communities we serve.
