Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, No Limits Theater Group Inc. will serve low-income deaf youth through our Los Angeles Theater Workshop program, which teaches theater and life-building skills with culminating public performances of our originally scripted plays. This program focuses on sharing the talents and voices of deaf youth as the country’s only theater program for deaf youth who are learning to speak.

Organization Summary

No Limits was founded in 1996 by Dr. Michelle Christie (named a 2017 CNN Hero) as a language-enriched theater program. In 2002, No Limits expanded to provide auditory, speech, and language training, as well as literacy, parent education, advocacy training, tutoring, and enrichment programs. All of our programming is provided free-of-charge.

The No Limits Theater Program engages deaf children and adults in professional theatrical productions as actors, storytellers, workshop team members, lighting and sound technicians, and directors. To date, No Limits has produced over 200 theatrical performances, reaching more than 500,000 people nationwide. Our Youth Theater Workshops Program is the only theater program in the country for deaf youth learning to speak. It is an immersive workshop-based model that culminates in public performances by using original, educationally based scripts for deaf children to increase self-esteem, expand vocabulary, and develop public speaking skills that help them confidently move through the world. No Limits also created “Silent NO MORE,” a nationally touring theatrical storytelling production (with a corresponding book) that aims to influence policies and perceptions by educating people across the world about the struggles and triumphs of people with hearing loss.

The No Limits Educational Centers (in Los Angeles and Oxnard, CA) and our 64 satellite and pop-up sites nationwide (including 54 in California) provide year-round comprehensive educational services at no cost to low-income families. Our programming includes individual speech and language therapy, literacy classes, academic tutoring, STEM engagement, arts enrichment, parent education and supports, a teen Leadership and Mentoring Academy, auditory device support, and much more. We also provide family learning and support modules through No Limits TV, accessible to all free-of-charge.
