Project Description

The Musicians at Play Foundation (MAP) provides access to and awareness of the Los Angeles’ diverse cultural heritage to Los Angeles schools and communities, through educational music and mentorship programs, and professional performances which fill the socio-economic needs of underserved youth and communities, creating career skills and pathways and supporting the creative cultural expression of the communities we serve.

MAP’s core values of Access, Excellence, Racial Equity and Inclusivity ensure free access to communities that even prior to the pandemic were underserved populations who have little to no ability to receive arts or music education. We effect positive social change through our programs which empower youth and enhance students’ growth as a whole person by developing confidence and creative expression through music, imagination, language, reasoning and intellectual curiosity.

Our purpose is to provide tuition-free music instruction programs aligned with VAPA standards to support teachers, parents, students and community members in defunded, marginalized communities suffering from systemic racism and the digital divide. The programs are Mentorship programs facilitated by accredited educators who are also professional local musicians in the Film, Concert Hall and Recording Industries in Los Angeles. (14) fourteen disciplines of music including Choral/Trumpet/Trombone/Tuba/Horn/Sax/ Clarinet/Flute/ Bass/Cello/Viola/Violin/Piano and Percussion.

MAP’s career pathway workshops introduce careers and apprenticeships in music-related fields such as Entertainment Lawyer, Music Producer, Artists’ and Performers’ Manager or Agent, Video Game Composer or Sound Designer,Public Relations (PR) Specialist, Sound Engineering Technician, Music Supervisor, Music Therapist, Music Teacher, Music Journalist and more.

We update our action plans annually to bring systemic/structural racism, violence, cultural/social justice, intergenerational learning, and the digital divide into the forefront of our programs.
