Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, MEDIA ARTS CENTER SAN DIEGO (MACSD) will engage underrepresented youth (ages 6–25) across San Diego County through the Young Producers Project (YPP), a visual storytelling and media literacy initiative. YPP includes the Teen Producers Project, Emerging Makers, City Heights IdeaLab, Young Creators Media Camp, student outreach screenings, Teen Filmmaking Bootcamps, in-school and library workshops, and a Workforce Development Initiative. For over 33 years, these programs have expanded in response to growing community demand, including in neighborhoods in the lower quartiles of the Healthy Places Index (HPI). CAC funds will strengthen MACSD’s capacity to serve youth facing systemic barriers to culturally relevant media/digital tools. Through hands-on filmmaking, mentorship, screenings, and free field trips, participants amplify their voices and transform their communities through media arts.

Organization Summary

MACSD programs, events, and film festivals are inclusionary—designed with audiences, participants, and community collaboration in mind. A summary of core organizational programs and services can be broken down into three categories:

WATCH— We produce the San Diego Latino Film Festival (SDLFF), including the iVIE Awards and Student Film Festival, as well as screen films at our independent cinema the Digital Gym CINEMA. We also exhibit the artworks produced through our educational programming during family screenings.

LEARN—Media education programs for youth fall under the umbrella of Young Producers Project (YPP) and include Young Creators Media Camps, Teen Producers Project, and the Workforce Development Initiative.

CREATE—Tools for community-based media production and collaboration include: production training courses for independent filmmakers in San Diego; and Video Production Services, helping community groups make digital media presence available and affordable.
