Project Description
With support from the California Arts Council, Heidi Duckler Dance implements a 12-week movement-based residency at the Jacqueline Avant Children and Family Center in Willowbrook. HDD Teaching Artists lead weekly, trauma-informed, inclusive workshops for youth ages 3–18, families, residents, and staff, including participants from the Autism Wellness Center. Sessions are adaptable for diverse physical, cognitive, and sensory needs, emphasizing accessibility and neurodiversity-affirming practice.
Workshops explore resilience, identity, and emotional wellbeing through creative movement, forming the basis for a collaboratively developed, site-specific performance. The residency culminates in two performances, one for Center participants and one public presentation and a community discussion with mental health professionals.
CAC funds support teaching artist fees, program delivery, accessibility services, and a community publication documenting the process and sharing mental health resources.
Organization Summary
Over the past 38 years, HDD has produced over 500 original works locally, nationally and internationally, creating interdisciplinary performances in many iconic locations, including: the Ambassador Hotel, Herald Examiner Building, LA City Hall, Van Nuys Flyaway Bus Terminal, Dunbar Hotel, and on the Tall Ships at the Port of LA. Its programs reach more than 7,500 individuals each year. Led by Heidi Duckler, HDD is a company of 12 resident artists and 5 staff committed to upholding inclusiveness, consciousness, vulnerability, and connectivity through their craft.
From its inception, HDD has made accessibility and inclusion core components of its mission. HDD works to promote access and cultural equity by focusing on engagement and building public/private partnerships with the capacity to strengthen neighborhoods.
