With support from the California Arts Council, FRIENDS OF SACRAMENTO ARTS will –
1. Create and facilitate 2 virtual statewide workshops with California PTA focused on educating parents and school leaders to ensure successful implementation of Proposition 28, the Arts and Music in Schools Initiative.
2. Create and facilitate 4 virtual workshops in partnership with Create CA for arts education leaders and arts organizations to expand their work in schools using Proposition 28 funds.
3. Coordinate the annual Heroes of Arts Education Awards Gala in March 2027 to honor outstanding arts educators from public schools in Sacramento, Yolo, Placer and El Dorado counties including providing them honorariums to further their work in the classroom.
4. Identify, recruit and mentor arts education leaders from 6 counties in partnership with Create (Sacramento, Placer, El Dorado, Yolo, Yuba, Amador)
In response to the reality that only one in five K-12 public school students receive arts education, Friends of Sacramento Arts (FOSA) works to engage, advocate and invest in the goal of arts every day, for every child, in every school. FOSA engages with the Sacramento County Office of Education, the county’s 14 school districts and the school districts in Placer, El Dorado and Yolo counties to increase awareness of the academic and social-emotional benefits of arts education. FOSA advocates for permanent financial investment at the state, county, district and school level. FOSA invests time and resources to provide professional development opportunities for arts educators to build an adequate labor force for schools to hire and create consistent, equitable and comprehensive arts education at all grade levels. FOSA uses a cultural equity lens to guide all our actions and priorities. FOSA is a member of a statewide policy council to further the work of Proposition 28, the Arts and Music in Schools funding initiative. FOSA provides workshops, convenings, resources and an annual arts educator awards event for the region.
