Project Description
With support from the California Arts Council, DRIFTSEED will produce, edit and release a short documentary called “to my body:” about a professional dancer and trained doula recovering physically and emotionally from a traumatic childbirth. The film will be accompanied by a community engagement Impact Toolkit, also created with support from the California Arts Council. The film and toolkit aim to create awareness, empathy, and solutions to lowering the black maternal mortality rate in California, and improving outcomes for black birthing mothers and babies. The film and impact materials will be created with support from practitioners in the UCLA School of Medicine and Kindred Spaces LA, where the materials will also be piloted for use in training medical and nursing students, midwives and doulas nationwide.
Organization Summary
Founded by Emmy Award-winning documentary filmmaker Sophia Kruz and Sundance Award-winning cinematographer Meena Singh, Driftseed produces documentary feature films and shorts as well as outreach and impact campaigns.
Our award-winning feature documentary, “Little Stones,” told the story of four women from around the world who are using music, street art, dance and fashion to combat violence against women. The film was screened at over 100 events and festivals globally, including at the United Nations and U.S. Congress. Driftseed also partnered with the University of Michigan School of Education to create robust educational materials to accompany the film, including 10 high school lesson plans and discussion guides, and two arts-based workshops to ignite social change.
In addition to producing film and impact campaigns, Driftseed also mentors and supports emerging female storytellers, and provides fiscal sponsorship for select projects aligned with our mission to advance the rights of women and girls globally.
