With support from the California Arts Council, Dohee Lee Puri Arts will produce, perform and tour contemporary performance art grounded in traditional Jeju Island ritual practices and informed by immigrant and refugee experiences in California today, creating art that heals fractured relationships between people and the land in urban communities.
Artistic Director, Dohee Lee was born on Jeju Island in South Korea. She trained at the master level in Korean dance, Korean percussion, and vocals rooted in Shamanism. Her organization focuses on integrating these traditional ritual forms with contemporary influences into programs and services that emphasize the mythical, experimental, ritualistic, historical and healing aspects of performance and installation, catalyzing new relationships between identity, nature, spirituality, and the political.
Programs and services include:
-National and international touring of Dohee Lee’s multidisciplinary performance works.
-Community rituals for healing and justice with partner Asian immigrant and refugee organizations and artists/activists from other communities of color
-Workshops, lecture-demos and master classes in dance, ritual arts, performance art/performance-making and healing for a wide range of community, educational and cultural partners across the state, U.S. and internationally
