Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, City Hearts’ H.E.A.R.T. in Arts Program will provide no-cost arts education and experiences, including weekly classes, field trips, masterclasses, and public performance opportunities for low-income youth across Los Angeles County. Taught by practicing professional artists during in-school and afterschool classes on Title I school campuses, neighborhood resource centers, and at the City Hearts’ Harbor City office, the H.E.A.R.T. program aims to close academic and career exposure opportunity gaps created by a lack of access to the Arts. Healing-centered and VAPA Standards-aligned, this program provides avenues for young people to see affirming representations of their cultures and develop a stronger sense of self and appreciation for Los Angeles County’s rich artistic and cultural legacy.

Organization Summary

City Hearts delivers Visual and Performing Arts programs throughout the school year through weekly in-school and afterschool classes that ensure consistent creative engagement for students. Current offerings include the following programs: Guitar & Songwriting, Mixed Media Arts, Movement Through Dance, Photography, Stand-Up Comedy (offered in limited 2-4 week sessions), The Wilson ’n William Theatre Program (our immersive, career-readiness acting program for high school students), and Young Actors Club (serving elementary and middle school youth).

Classes are held primarily on Title I school campuses to remove transportation and access barriers, with one program hosted at our Harbor-area office. All programs are provided at no cost to students and their families, ensuring equitable access to high-quality arts education.

In addition, we provide unique arts experiences that deepen student learning and creative career exposure, including Masterclass workshops led by renowned Guest Artists, field trips to prestigious museums and live theatre performances, and meaningful culminating opportunities such as our recent student showcase hosted by NBCUniversal.
