With support from the California Arts Council, Chapter 510 INK will provide free and low-cost creative writing, podcasting, and bookmaking programs to 600+ Oakland youth ages 8–19, centering Black, brown, queer, and immigrant young people from the city’s most under-resourced neighborhoods. CAC funds will support 15 workshops at our Writing Center and Oakland Unified School District partner schools, including an in-school poetry program for 220 fourth graders, storytelling field trips for 300+ elementary students, a credit-bearing creative writing course for Designated English Language Development middle school students, and a podcasting workshop for high school students focused on mental health and wellness. Students will publish their work in 16 anthologies and magazines and perform at school and community events. All programs are led by BIPOC and/or queer Teaching Artists using culturally responsive, trauma-informed pedagogy.
