Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, BODY WISDOM INC will strengthen the sustainability and ongoing operations of our organization that began as a small grassroots community arts effort. We have grown into an internationally recognized leader in embodied arts, creativity, and community connection. Grant funds will support core operating expenses, including artist and staff support, accessible programming, community outreach, facilities, and communications, that make our year-round arts and cultural programming possible. Through InterPlay, an active and inclusive approach integrating movement, storytelling, voice, and creative play, Body Wisdom, Inc. serves diverse communities across California, fostering wellbeing, resilience, belonging, and meaningful human connection through the arts. Funding will help ensure continued access to culturally responsive, intergenerational programming that uplifts community voices, supports healing and creativity, and expands participation for historically underserved and systemically marginalized communities.

Organization Summary

Life Practice Program – Provides a 4-8-month InterPlay immersion for small groups of 5-15 people, focused on integrating the practices and principles of InterPlay into everyday life. Approximately 1,000 people have completed this program since the organization’s founding.

Leader Training Program – Provides continued training and mentoring for graduates of the Life Practice Program who want to become certified InterPlay leaders. We currently have over 200 Certified InterPlay leaders in over 60 cities and 6 continents.

Art and Social Change Program – An annual summer immersion for artist-activists ages 18-40. Participants learn InterPlay’s “sneaky deep” way of building artistic skill, leadership ability and strong community. They are supported both during and after the experience in how they might apply InterPlay to help people play with difficult issues, listen and share the wisdom of their body, and tell stories in ways that are direct, personal, and transformational.

“Untensive” workshops and retreats through the year – Multiple-day retreats immersing participants in the easy and accessible practices of InterPlay. Current examples of Untensive and special events include:
Annual InterPlay Leaders Gathering
Black, Indigenous, People of Color Retreats
Waking Up White
