Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, Bay Area Music Project (BAMP) will advance the growth of our independent facility, BAMP Studio, a new community music education center, expanding access to youth beyond our partner school sites. The center will create new employment opportunities for teaching artists and house industry-standard music production technology to support our growing music production programs.

CAC funds will also support BAMP’s TK-8 partner school programs that serve under-resourced students from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. BAMP serves over 200 Bay Area students and is launching a new partnership with the Sausalito Marin City School District in 2026, with a projected enrollment of 150 students. BAMP empowers future leaders through a student-centered, socio-emotional learning model. This expansion marks a transformative step toward broader access to an inclusive creative future.

Organization Summary

Bay Area Music Project (BAMP) serves over 300 young people ages 4–25 from under-resourced communities in Alameda and Marin County, where access to high-quality music education is limited. More than half of our students identify as low-income, and BAMP is committed to removing barriers to participation through sliding-scale and full-tuition scholarships, free instruments and inclusive, culturally responsive programming. In 2026, BAMP will expand its regional impact through a new partnership with the Sausalito Marin City School District, bringing equitable music education opportunities to youth in Southern Marin.

BAMP currently operates across multiple program sites during the academic year. Our immersive after-school programming operates 3–6 hours daily, five days per week. Beginning in second grade, students choose from a range of music-making pathways, including choir, strings, winds, brass, percussion, ukulele, and music composition and production. Our instructional model emphasizes small-group learning, leveled ensembles, mentorship, and repertoire that reflects the cultures and identities of the communities we serve. Students regularly perform throughout the Bay Area through collaborations with organizations including West End Arts District, Radium Presents, Young People’s Symphony Orchestra, and the Recording Academy San Francisco Chapter.

In 2025, BAMP launched BAMP Creative Studio, a music education center for students ages 12–25, offering intensive instruction in music production, recording technology and a chamber music and orchestral program. In year two, BAMP will expand programming, reduce barriers to access, and develop credentials that strengthen students’ college and career pathways.

BAMP’s community impact has earned widespread recognition, including the 2024 Alameda County Arts Leadership Award, the 2023 Jefferson Award for Public Service, and the 2021 Spotlight on Quality Award from the California Department of Education. At our core, we believe every child deserves the transformative power of music and the confidence to thrive.
