Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, Baking Wellness will offer 4 cohorts and 3 camps of baking lessons to middle school youth in the Oakland Bay Area. Funds will support student scholarships as well as staff time in designing and implementing innovative and educational baking lessons that support skill building, meaningful relationships, and positive wellbeing. Throughout each baking session, participants become youth “culinary artists”, using baking as a creative and culturally rooted art form. Funds will contribute to our curriculum development that uplifts baking as both an artistic and cultural practice, allowing participants to explore identity and self-expression through food. In addition, throughout each lesson we emphasize the concept of “mindful baking”, emphasizing how baking can serve as a healthy outlet for managing stress and expressing creativity.

Organization Summary

Baking Wellness provides baking lessons as a method for hands-on learning, artistic expression, leadership development, and social-emotional wellbeing. Our program is designed to support middle school youth in developing practical kitchen skills while also fostering confidence, creativity, and a strong sense of belonging. Lessons are delivered in small-group cohorts of up to eight youth to ensure individualized attention, relationship building, and a safe kitchen environment. We offer two program models: a community-based cohort and a school-based cohort, which ensures accessibility and consistency for youth and families. Our program is designed where each cohort meets for a weekly, two-hour session over eight to ten weeks, aligning with the after-school enrichment calendar.

Throughout each cohort, participants become youth “culinary artists”, using baking as a creative and culturally rooted art form. We explore relevant recipes and implement collaborative learning that allow participants to practice communication and teamwork. Using evidence-based frameworks centered on social-emotional learning and positive youth development, Baking Wellness intentionally supports youth in developing kitchen and baking skills while providing the space to develop meaningful relationships and a sense of responsibility. In addition, our program introduces youth to the concept of “mindful baking”, where we explore how baking can serve as a healthy outlet for managing stress and expressing creativity. Participants are encouraged to move slowly and fully immerse themselves in the baking process which not only enhances creativity but also calms the mind and fosters a deep sense of presence.
