With support from the California Arts Council, Art + Climate Action will launch Floating Forest / Bosque Flotante, a public art and design-build initiative developing a small fleet of hand-built boats in the Canal District, a waterfront neighborhood in San Rafael. Working from a former boatyard and future pedestrian bridge site, artist Amy Franceschini / Futurefarmers and a team rooted in the Canal will lead workshops where residents and students design, build, and test prototypes on the water. Developed with Canal Alliance, the City of San Rafael, and the Marin Museum of Contemporary Art, the project centers the leadership of one of the Bay Area’s most climate-vulnerable communities, connecting artistic practice to climate adaptation, mobility, and shoreline stewardship. CAC funds support artist fees, participant stipends, materials, and accessibility—laying the groundwork for community-designed vessels moored in the Canal.
