Art and Cake’s core programs and services are centered on its role as publisher of Art and Cake Magazine, an online contemporary arts publication focused on the LA art scene. Since assuming the publication in 2024 and formalizing its organizational identity as Art and Cake in early 2026, we have made a deliberate shift to concentrate resources on arts writing as its primary service to the field.

This transition was driven by a clear gap in the cultural landscape. As legacy publications have reduced or eliminated arts coverage, fewer exhibitions- particularly outside major institutions-receive attention. Art and Cake addresses this need by publishing reviews, interviews, and artist features that document and contextualize a broader range of artistic activity, with a particular emphasis on emerging and underrepresented voices.

The magazine serves multiple, interconnected functions. For artists, it provides visibility, validation, and critical framing that can be essential to career development. For writers, it offers a rare and increasingly vital platform for publication, mentorship, and professional growth in a contracting field. For audiences, it creates accessible entry points into contemporary art, translating complex ideas into engaging and relevant dialogue.

Art and Cake’s editorial approach prioritizes inclusivity and accessibility, ensuring that both contributors and subjects reflect the diversity of the Los Angeles region. By focusing on exhibitions and practices often overlooked by mainstream press, the publication expands the cultural record and supports a more equitable distribution of attention and opportunity.

While earlier iterations of the organization included professional development, artist services, and exhibitions, leadership determined that many of those offerings duplicated existing resources. In contrast, the need for independent, accessible arts writing remains acute. By refining focus, Art and Cake strengthens its impact: operating as a platform and a public resource that sustains dialogue, visibility, and critical engagement across the contemporary art ecosystem.
