Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, Angels Gate Cultural Center (AGCC) will provide equitable, youth-centered arts education for students across the Los Angeles Harbor Region through an integrated offering of in-and-out-of-school programs, including: Artists-in-Classrooms, Arts Exploration Field Trips, Teen Mural Club, and free, family-focused community workshops. Funding will support Artist-Teacher and education leadership staff salaries, transportation costs for students to access on-site arts experiences, and art supplies, all ensuring that participation is at no cost to youth and families. These programs primarily serve students from Title I schools, many of whom have limited access to arts education and cultural institutions. By combining in-school instruction, exposure to professional art spaces, and opportunities for creative expression rooted in identity and community, AGCC fosters artistic development, academic success, and pathways for continued engagement in the arts.

Organization Summary

Angels Gate Cultural Center (AGCC) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide space for artists to work and to engage the community through arts education, exhibitions of contemporary art, and cultural events in the Los Angeles Harbor Region.

AGCC emerged in the 1970s when a group of artists gathered to create artist studios and exhibition space in the 1940s-era Army barracks of Angels Gate Park in San Pedro, California. The site became a facility of the City of Los Angeles Recreation and Parks Department in 1977, with the requirement that a cultural center be developed to benefit the community. In 1982, AGCC was established as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) to provide a variety of arts engagement opportunities for the San Pedro community.

Today, AGCC provides greater access to the arts—and to artists themselves—for Harbor Region families. In recent years, we have seen how the arts have the ability to uniquely strengthen communities and foster a renewed sense of belonging. At AGCC, we deliver high-quality arts programs while seeking to create safe spaces for gathering, to help break down social barriers, and to encourage community collaboration and wellbeing.
