Project Description
With support from the CAC, Act Out Theatre Company will sustain and expand its tuition-free performing arts and youth development programs serving youth and families in Long Beach. Funding will support core expenses, facility and production costs, program supplies, and essential administrative infrastructure. Act Out will produce four annual mainstage productions, provide year-round arts education workshops, and operate its youth leadership program. These programs serve over 400 participants annually, primarily youth from low-to-moderate income communities, with expanded access through partnerships with the Long Beach Unified School District and emerging collaboration with Long Beach City College.
CAC funding will ensure programs remain tuition-free, removing financial barriers while supporting social-emotional development, creative expression, and college and career readiness. General Operating Support will strengthen organizational capacity to meet increasing community demand and deepen impact across Long Beach.
Organization Summary
Act Out Theatre Company provides tuition-free, high-quality performing arts education and youth development programming designed to remove barriers to access while fostering creativity, confidence, and community connection. Our programs create a safe, inclusive environment where participants build collaboration skills, strengthen academic engagement, and develop lifelong social and leadership abilities.
We deliver our mission through three core program areas:
1. Mainstage Productions
We produce four fully staged theatrical productions annually: a Spring musical, Summer play, Fall play for elementary-aged youth (grades 2–5), and a Fall musical. These productions offer participants hands-on, pre-professional training in acting, music, and technical theater while working collaboratively toward a shared goal. Each production culminates in multi-day public performances, providing participants with meaningful opportunities for artistic expression and community engagement. All productions are tuition-free and open to youth and adults, with a primary focus on serving students in grades 2–12.
2. Arts Education Workshops
We offer year-round, arts-based workshops through after-school and summer programming for youth ages 7–17. These multidisciplinary workshops include acting, music, movement, etc. and are designed to build foundational artistic skills while supporting social-emotional learning, teamwork, and self-confidence. Recent expansion of school-based partnerships has significantly increased access to these programs for underserved youth.
3. Youth Leadership Development (Jr. Board of Directors)
Our Jr. Board of Directors is a structured leadership development program for high school students. Participants complete over 100 hours of community service annually while gaining hands-on experience in leadership, program support, and organizational operations. The program emphasizes both practical career skills and essential soft skills such as communication, responsibility, and teamwork, helping students strengthen college and career readiness while serving as role models within the organization.
Through these programs, Act Out Theatre Company equips young people with the creative, social, and professional skills needed to succeed in school, careers, and their communities.
