Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, A PLACE OF HER OWN (PLACE) will pilot accessible public engagement approaches that adapt selected PLACE-informed practices into flexible entry points for reflection, dialogue, transformation, and community participation.
Building on over 15 years of community-rooted arts-based practice, PLACE will work with SF Bay Area, Central Valley alumni and community partners to gather feedback, mentor alumni collaborators, and collaboratively adapt creative prompts and participatory engagement activities based on accessibility, cultural relevance, and Central Valley community needs.
Alumni gatherings and cross-regional exchange will support ongoing relationship-building while helping CV alumni integrate selected PLACE-informed practices into their own family, cultural, and community contexts.

Organization Summary

We offer both hybrid, online and in-person lectures, workshops, art exhibitions, lectures and artists’ talks sharing intuitive art making processes for self-reflection, and group discussions that help explore and release generational family trauma. Participants learn to recognize and release family patterns, including links to cultural and societal dysfunction. To claim aspirations, and grow self-agency, the art workshops, artists’ talks and exhibitions provide platforms to artistically answer the question: “If you had a place of your own, what would it be?” This is an artistic exercise in “self-agency”.
Below is our foundational hybrid, virtual and in-person workshop series with the goal of providing a printed book and an online e-learning engagement tools.
Foundational WORKSHOP Residency series in 4 PHASES (These are customized to suit the community or organization we are serving.)
Preparation: Turning on Your Intuition: Intuitive Collage. Experience accessing your intuition and turning off your analytic brain.
Phase 1: Exploring Hungry Ghosts– Identifying family patterns and beliefs holding you back.
Phase 2: Releasing Hungry Ghosts– Art projects to release beliefs and patterns no longer serving you. Practicing self-acceptance and forgiveness.
Phase 3: Claiming My PLACE– Intentional Art creation in answer to, “If you had a place of your own, what would it be?” as practice embodying new beliefs.
Phase 4: Proclaiming My PLACE– The Exhibition/Artists’ Talk. A public statement of what you want for your life. Practice overcoming fear of judgement.

Leadership Development:
PLACE works to provide alumni with opportunities for deeper healing and to practice new felt self-agency into leadership. Alumnae are invited to participate as exhibition artists, workshop facilitators, speakers, event coordinators and community workshop collaborators.
