Gamelan Sekar Jaya (GSJ) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the study and presentation of Balinese performing arts. GSJ’s mission is to foster artistic exchange between Bali and the United States through residencies, workshops, performances, and the creation of innovative new works of music and dance; and to share the excitement of this exchange with diverse audiences in California, the US, and abroad. GSJ has built a unique and thriving community that is both diverse and multi-generational. Widely known for its artistry as a performance group, GSJ’s greatest pride is the meaningful contribution it has made to a profound cultural exchange, one that has affected the lives of countless people both in the US and in Indonesia. As an organization, GSJ is deeply committed to fostering a spirit of inclusivity that both attracts and celebrates the cultural diversity that makes its community so unique.
GSJ is currently seeking a Program and Administrative Assistant to ensure the successful operation of GSJ’s unique intercultural arts programming by handling day to day office responsibilities. The Program and Administrative Assistant will report directly to the General Manager, and regularly assist the General Manager and Operations Manager with program, communications, and development tasks. This is a part-time position at 20 hours per week with potential for additional hours in busy times. The Program and Administrative Assistant will be expected to work at least three days per week. Hours and specific days are flexible. The position is based out of our “Banjar” (community center) in Berkeley, CA. All GSJ programming is currently remote. This position will work remotely until public health guidelines allow for in-person office work, except when duties occasionally require an on-site visit.
Performances and rehearsal visits necessitate weekend and/or evening work at least once per week during the performance season (generally September-June).
Job Responsibilities
Qualifications
Nice-to-Have
This is a part-time .5 FTE position at 20 hours per week, with an hourly wage of $18 to $20 (depending on experience), a monthly benefits stipend, and opportunities for additional hours during busy periods. GSJ employees receive paid time off and 13 paid holidays annually. PTO and holidays are commensurate with the position’s FTE rate, in this case 4 hours of PTO per month and 4 paid hours for each paid holiday. The GSJ work environment is dynamic, creative, and supportive, with great flexibility.
GSJ is an Equal Opportunity Employer and does not discriminate against applicants due to veteran status or on the basis of disability. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, or gender identity. GSJ is happy to make reasonable accommodations for applicants and employees with disabilities.
Racial Equity Statement
GSJ acknowledges that the Bay Area is a region of deep inequity, where Black and Indigenous communities and communities of color disproportionately face gentrification, systematic exclusion from housing and jobs, and lack of access to arts and cultural spaces.
As part of GSJ’s mission to “foster artistic exchange between Bali and the United States through residencies, workshops, performances, and the creation of innovative new works of music and dance; and to share the excitement of this exchange with diverse audiences”, GSJ pledges to advance anti-racist ideals through its intercultural arts programming and within its organizational culture.
