Project Description
With support from the California Arts Council, BACCES will strengthen its operational capacity to sustain our transformative work centering BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, disabled and low-income circus artists. Operating funding support will stabilize our ongoing infrastructure: (1) staff/volunteer compensation; (2) access coordination (3) data gathering/evaluation; (4) outreach; (5) governance; and (6) financial administration. It will also support administration of our continued programming: (1) artist residency and public performances; (2) Local program microgrants; (3) Festival attendance; (4) Cultural Change initiative; and (5) Open source anti-racist educational training. This investment empowers sustainable operations while ensuring our work remains by-and-for underrepresented communities, meeting CAC’s accessibility standards and redistributing resources directly to those historically excluded from circus arts.
Organization Summary
As an arts organization dedicated to fostering equity and innovation in circus arts, we center our work on empowering BIPOC acrobats through creative development, performance opportunities, and systemic change in the broader circus industry. Our core program is called ‘Take Power, Make Power’, a multidisciplinary artist residency that equips BIPOC acrobats with artistic tools, collaborative methodologies, and professional development to create original, dynamic performances. This program culminates in public showcases that challenge traditional circus narratives, offering bold, community-driven storytelling rooted in cultural resilience and creative expression.. We also work with acrobatic event organizers to provide access for BIPOC acrobats and help them to evolve their events into more inclusive and decolonized spaces. We support local program initiatives for BIPOC acrobats to further their training or performance needs.
