Project Description
With the CAC grant funds, Karen Organization of San Diego (KOSD) will offer a Karen Traditional Dance Education Program for refugee youth from Burma who are 3-25 years old. This is the only art programming in San Diego offering traditional Karen Dance instructions, and KOSD aims to support at least 50 youth through the program to make sure that they can participate in free arts learning activities rooted in their own cultural heritage and have opportunities to perform at various local events and cultural festivals. Although the proposed program targets youth with refugee experiences from Burma, KOSD welcomes any youth in the community who are interested in learning Karen traditional dance and who may not otherwise have access to arts learning activities.
Organization Summary
Founded in 2009, KOSD has served more than 600 refugees and newcomers from Burma each year through case management, support groups, community education, youth leadership development, and culture preservation. KOSD’s art and culture programming includes traditional dances, weaving, and heritage language classes as well as the oral history preservation project and coordination of various culture events.
