Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, the Capoeira Arts Foundation, Inc. (CAF), will continue meeting the evolving needs of our community by providing programming rooted in Afro-Brazilian and Afro-Diasporic cultural arts. CAF’s four core programs focus on education; The healing powers of art music and culture as practiced in a diverse multigenerational community; The security of spaces we can count on – dedicated to belonging – highlighting and embracing our differences; Honoring where we come from as an integral part of our path forward.

Today CAF’s programs serve over 1000 people a week, on a shoestring budget. With CAC’s operational support we could to pay much needed staff, invest in organizational growth, and stabilize operations.

Organization Summary

CAF has four programs: 1) Saúde: Our public health outreach initiative, Saúde, integrates health and wellness practices with our artistic offerings. 2) Legados: The legacy program focuses on safeguarding and sharing the intellectual property and archives of our artists. This legacy project ensures that the rich cultural heritage of Afro-Brazilian arts remains accessible to future generations. 3) Educação: Our education initiatives provide professional development and continuing education opportunities for our artists as well as classes and workshops for our broader community. 4) Casa de Cultura: Our building in West Berkeley, serves as a vibrant community space for arts and cultural activities that brings together diverse community members, fostering a sense of belonging and inclusion. It is a place where the rich traditions of Afro-Brazilian culture are celebrated and shared.
