Currently CYOSC has 3 ensembles that provide young musicians with the opportunity to play in an ensemble, learning ensemble skills and developing their general musical ability. There are several performances each year, as well as the chance to participate in an annual concerto competition. The winner of this competition performs as a soloist at the Finale Concert. Selected other participants in the competition perform as a soloist with a chamber orchestra of hired professionals. The three ensembles are: Sinfonietta – a string orchestra ensemble for students K-4th Grade; Philharmonia – a string ensemble for students in grades 5-8; Symphony Orchestra – a full orchestra including strings, winds, and brass for student in grades 8-12. There is also an invitation-only Solisti ensemble that meets for part of the season to perform in community events (e.g., the Holiday Music program and Santa Ana Airport and City of Irvine events). All students in these programs and ensembles are paying members, although we offer hardship scholarships, performance scholarships, and brass and viola scholarships. Finally, there is a volunteer program for high school students wishing to help younger musicians. Most of students sit alongside their younger peers and help them to play their instruments and support their learning environment. A small number of the volunteers help to take photos and videos for the organization. All volunteers help with general operations at concerts and rehearsals.
