Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, The Muckenthaler Cultural Center will deliver year-round arts education programming for developmentally delayed young adults ages 18–25, in partnership with REACH Services. Through four 13-week sessions, participants at REACH’s Los Nietos facility will engage in twice-weekly, artist-led classes in visual arts and ceramics. Led by teaching artist Jac Alva and supported by master ceramicist Willie Tabata, students will build technical, creative, and communication skills while deepening cultural literacy and community connection. CAC funds will support teaching artist fees, curriculum development, studio materials, and accessible arts experiences, serving sixty participants annually, including gallery visits, hands-on studio instruction, reflective critique, and meaningful opportunities for self-expression, confidence building, social engagement, and lifelong participation in California’s arts ecosystem for underserved young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities across Los Angeles County.

Organization Summary

The Muckenthaler produces more than 60 performances, gallery exhibits, festivals and special events; and more than 3,500 hours of arts education classes at the Muck and in 25 outreach sites serving more than 41,000 people every year.
