Project Description
With support from the California Arts Council, Taste of Freedom Project will present Standing on Their Shoulders, a free intergenerational and multicultural arts celebration at Fresno Pacific University that honors the legacy of Central Valley elders and historically underrepresented communities. This funding will support artist and speaker fees, multicultural drumming and dance performances, storytelling workshops, youth art engagement, visual arts presentations, outreach, materials, accessibility supports, and project coordination. Our project will bring together elders, youth, families, artists, educators, and community partners to preserve cultural memory, uplift overlooked histories, and create a welcoming space for healing, belonging, and creative expression. Through workshops, performances, oral storytelling, poetry, music, and visual art, the project will strengthen intergenerational connection and help community members see their histories reflected with dignity.

The Taste of Freedom Project offers mission-driven programs that preserve and present California’s history through arts and education. Our core initiatives include:
1. Immersive Exhibitions- Engaging, interactive displays that bring California’s history to life through art, sound, and performance, grounded in historical research and community storytelling.
2. Arts-Based Education- Culturally responsive programs for students and educators, featuring workshops and resources that enhance understanding of California’s diverse cultures.
3. Oral History Projects- Collection and presentation of oral histories from underrepresented communities, preserving valuable narratives for exhibits and digital media.
4. Artist Collaborations- Support for artists to create works that explore historical and cultural themes, resulting in public art and community projects.
5. Community Events- Programs like cultural festivals and panel discussions that promote dialogue and connection among diverse communities.
6. Youth Engagement- Empowering youth to explore their heritage and develop leadership skills through mentorship and creative workshops.
7. Accessibility and Equity: Commitment to free or low-cost programming and inclusive planning processes to meet the diverse needs of our communities. The Taste of Freedom Project delivers mission-driven programs that authentically preserve and present California’s history through the arts and education. Rooted in truth, dignity, and respect, our core programs offer immersive, inclusive experiences that connect diverse communities to the state’s rich and complex past.
