Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, Vita Art Center will strengthen the core operations that make its community arts programs accessible, inclusive, and sustainable. General Operating Support will help sustain staff, teaching artists, exhibitions, studio programs, outreach partnerships, scholarships, and the day-to-day systems needed to serve Ventura artists, youth, families, seniors, and adults.

CAC funds will support Vita’s ongoing work as a visual arts and cultural hub, including free and low-cost classes, youth and teen programs, adaptive ceramics for children with disabilities, programs at nearby low-income housing sites, LGBTQ+ teen workshops, artist studios, gallery exhibitions, and culturally responsive community programming. This support will help Vita remove barriers to participation, fairly compensate artists and staff, and continue building a welcoming creative community where people of all ages can learn, make, exhibit, and connect.

Organization Summary

Since 2008, Vita Art Center has been an important part of Ventura’s cultural life, offering high-quality arts education, exhibitions, and community-based programming. The organization creates opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to engage with the visual arts through classes, workshops, exhibitions, and artist-centered spaces that support both creative practice and community connection. Vita Art Center’s campus includes four galleries, a dedicated teen exhibition wall, a ceramics studio, an outdoor classroom, and 45 artist studios, making it a vibrant place where art is made, experienced, and shared.

With more than 30 classes offered onsite each week, Vita Art Center serves youth, teens, and adults through hands-on instruction led by teaching artists who bring both skill and passion to their work. These programs help participants build artistic techniques while also developing creativity, confidence, critical thinking, and self-expression. In addition to its onsite offerings, Vita Art Center brings free arts programming to low-income housing communities, serving youth, seniors, and formerly homeless adults. The organization also offers cultural classes taught by Chumash artists and knowledge keepers, connected to the building of a tomol onsite, as well as a ceramics program created for children with disabilities.

Across all of its work, Vita Art Center is committed to making the arts accessible, inclusive, and deeply connected to community. By bringing together exhibitions, education, working artist studios, and outreach programs, the organization helps foster belonging, cultural understanding, and meaningful creative exchange throughout Ventura.
