Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, TILTshift Dance will successfully implement and further build our 2027 programming. CAC grant funds will allow us to adequately pay and increase our number of artists, residents, and interns served, as well as bring on much needed administrative help, deepening our community reach and impact.

Some of our notable programs include:

Asian American Dance Festival (AADF) – San Diego’s first and only dance festival, centering AAPI artists, stories, and communities.

AADF Collaborative Residency, Internship & Fellowship – A professional development program, offering mentorship for early/mid-career AAPI artists.

AADF Winter Symposium – A weekend of dance/movement classes, uplifting the visibility of our local AAPI dance/movement instructors.

AADF Gatherings – Networking events for AAPI dance/movement professionals.

ChoreoWreck – Choreographic research process that incorporates community engagement.

OpenLAB – Communal studio space for dance artists to work.

Organization Summary

As dance makers, we create works for stage, film, and site specific. As dance teachers, we offer classes in modern, contemporary and conditioning/fitness. As dance educators, we hold workshops in choreography and encourage dialog through facilitated “wrecking” events. As community driven dance artists, we provide opportunities and space for other dance artists to work on their craft, to dig into the creative process, to collaborate artistically, and to tell their stories in their own voices. We curate and present the annual Asian American Dance Festival (AADF), San Diego’s first and only full dance festival celebrating AAPI dance artists. In addition to performance showcases, AADF also consists of a residency and internship program for early to mid-career AAPI dance artists.
