Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, SAFE BLACK SPACE (SBS), a 501(c)(3) organization specializing in African-centered wellness, will implement the Black Men’s Healing Facilitator Initiative from February 2027 through June 2027. This leadership development program addresses “racial battle fatigue” and systemic trauma among Black men by certifying them in culturally rooted healing arts. The funding supports:

Capacity Building: Training a cohort of 10 Black men in the SAFE BLACK SPACE Community Healing Circle methodology—a Community-Defined Evidence Practice.

Cultural Arts Integration: Partnering with artist Leon Willis (AlphabetEx) to integrate embodied movement, visual storytelling, and mindfulness into the wellness curriculum.

Direct Community Impact: Supporting a public-facing cohort-led wellness activation, culminating in a large-scale Juneteenth Celebration in collaboration with another local organization.

Economic Support: Providing stipends to the cohort and trainers, ensuring equitable compensation for cultural labor.

Organization Summary

Safe Black Space implements cultural and community-driven healing and connection activities.
• Community Healing and African Drum Circles: Facilitating safe environments for emotional processing of racial stress and trauma and connecting with Black culture and joy. Inclusive of artistic forms of healing.
• Wellness Activities: Providing culturally rooted self and community care services that increase health and wellness, such as African-centered yoga, sound baths, stress management techniques
• Culturally Anchored Events: Hosting gatherings like the annual Kwanzaa Kutoa Celebration which affirm identity, build social cohesion, and celebrate community honorees.
• Educational Outreach: Providing healing-centered education, meditation sessions, and book study groups to equip participants with long-term coping strategies.
