Project Description
With support from the California Arts Council, LAITY THEATER COMPANY will expand LEAP through a Creative Youth Development initiative serving approximately 100 underserved students in grades 1–8 across the Antelope Valley while creating paid arts employment for five young adult community members, ages 18–25. These near-peer teaching aides, recruited from the same neighborhoods and schools as our students, will work alongside professional arts faculty in after-school visual and performing arts classes, supporting standards-aligned instruction and serving as culturally resonant role models. Grant funds will also support two curated arts exposure field trips and two participatory assemblies connected to classroom learning. This initiative expands meaningful arts access for children while providing young adults with mentorship, workforce experience, and professional development.
Organization Summary
Laity’s Organization’s Core Programs and Services are courses in: Art, Animation, Ceramic Arts, Dance, Drama and Music. These courses are taught by professional and semi-professional artist in their field of study. Our courses are designed to help increase the overall awareness in the visual and performing arts in schools, and the tremendous role they play in the overall development of the student.
Laity has developed the Laity Education Arts Program. LEAP is an after-school arts program designed to help augment and support the teaching of the arts during the traditional school day with a comprehensive content-based arts program. To reach this goal, LIA focuses on three key areas:
· Skills – what the student learns from the instructor
· Confidence – how the student executes what he/she has learned
· Motivation – what the student is willing to learn next
To achieve this classes in art, animation, ceramic art, dance, drama and music are taught after school 3 hours a day Monday through Friday.
