Project Description
With support from the California Arts Council, ConAmor Building Bridges project will advance a more inclusive historical narrative at Columbia Historic State Park by centering the essential—yet long overlooked—contributions of Latino and Mexican pioneers. History is not fixed; it is shaped by who is invited to speak and whose stories are heard. While the Gold Rush is typically framed through a Eurocentric lens, this initiative reframes the story through the 1862 Cinco de Mayo origin event, a pivotal moment in Tuolumne County’s multicultural past. The public will experience this shift through an immersive cultural festival featuring traditional and contemporary performances, bilingual storytelling, and interpretive exhibits. By reclaiming this narrative, the project highlights the political agency of the Mexican community and lays the groundwork for a more accurate and inclusive understanding of California’s Gold Rush heritage.

Our programs aim to transform community relationships by honoring multicultural art and history, amplifying underrepresented voices, and fostering meaningful dialogue across differences.
One of the placemaking strategies chosen by ConAmor is the use of a multicultural festival framework. Festivals create ongoing opportunities for dialogue and negotiation within communities, as individuals and groups explore meaningful concepts of identity, belonging and dynamics of exclusion. Celebrations like these offer a sense of joy, and shared pride while opening space to embrace art, collective histories, and a diversity of cultural expressions that challenge discriminatory values.
Multicultural festivals also provide powerful opportunities to educate younger generations about artistic and cultural traditions, beliefs, and practices They help strengthen protective factors -connection, cultural pride, intergenerational learning, and community cohesion- that benefit everyone in our region.
