Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, Eye Zen Presents will complete and launch Walk With Me, a self-guided, GPS-based audio walking tour activating LGBTQ+ history in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury. Funds will support final production of six audio episodes featuring archival recordings from more than twenty queer elders, original sound design, and illustrated visuals, along with accessibility features including transcripts and navigation guidance. Grant support will also expand Queer History Happened Here storefront installations, placing QR-linked stories and images in neighborhood businesses. In November 2026, Eye Zen Presents will present public launch events, including facilitated community walks and site-responsive performances that invite collective engagement with the work. The project will remain accessible as an ongoing public artwork embedded in the neighborhood, preserving endangered histories and returning them to the community through place-based storytelling.

Organization Summary

Since our founding in 2007, Eye Zen Presents has created multidisciplinary community-building events in San Francisco in traditional and alternative theater spaces, private homes, gardens and community centers. Our productions focus on LGBTQ+ history and experimentally blend performative and visual disciplines: physical theater, puppetry, contemporary dance, drag, circus, live music, and video. We work with community partners to devise and produce new performance, curate exhibitions and offer educational opportunities. Our walking tours create an immersive spectacle in real time and in public space, using sidewalks, plazas, parks, and privately owned public open spaces (POPOS).
