Project Description

With support from the California Arts Council, Teatro Nagual will implement a culturally responsive youth visual storytelling and mentorship program serving underserved BIPOC youth ages 15–24 in Sacramento. Through weekly workshops led by community-rooted visual storytellers and mentors, participants will explore digital and analog photography, develop technical and artistic storytelling skills, and create original works reflecting their communities, identities, and lived experiences. CAC funds will support artist mentorship, participant stipends, accessibility efforts, and access to professional-grade photography equipment donated through a community photography lending initiative inspired by acclaimed photographer John Castillo. The project will culminate in a public exhibition at Casa de Español celebrating youth voices, cultural storytelling, and community connection.
