Project Description
With support from the California Arts Council, Coin & Ghost (C&G) will produce a dynamic, imaginative, and equitable season of theatre. The season will include a World Premiere from a rising playwright, a new works incubator series, and events designed to foster a deep sense of community.
2025-26 represents a pivotal season in C&G’s growth. For the first time in our near-ten-year history, we’ve moved from paying project-based stipends to hourly wages for creative work. That decision wasn’t just an ethical one; it was rooted in financial stability and a clear roadmap, and is supported by a deeply engaged Board of directors and steady increases to several funding sources (including both earned & contributed revenue). Funding from the California Arts Council would provide stability as we navigate this rapid growth phase and ambitious season.
Organization Summary
C&G is known for its imaginative remixing of known mythologies. We employ an expansive definition of mythology as “any set of stories that simultaneously SHAPED and WAS SHAPED BY a culture.” This allows us to explore not only traditionally understood myths – Greek, Roman, Creation Myths, etc. – but contemporary source material as well. Comic books have a mythology to them, as do the collected works of James Baldwin; the Kennedy dynasty can be viewed as American mythology. We take stories that live within our collective understanding, then collaborate with playwrights and ensemble-devising techniques to forge a new understanding. We sample, recontextualize, adapt, and transform, filtering the material through Coin & Ghost’s voice and aesthetic.
