Project Description

With California Arts Council support, Art Forces and the SUMUD Mural Community will create the 9000-square-foot SUMUD Community Building and Event Space, a series of 3 public and free events and a multi-layered interactive multimedia program, accessible by both smart and regular phones, of community storytelling and cultural expressions of hope, life, imagination and community building. The approximately 33 Oakland organizations and 50 artists, both local and incarcerated, who collaborated in 2024 to create the Oakland SUMUD mural will reunite in person and virtually as needed to participate in a series of workshops over several months. Video, poetry, music, archival photos, data visualization, maps, and more will be created and gathered in the workshops to amplify each of the mural images to make a mural tour–accessible on-site and remotely via ArcGIS technology.

Organization Summary

Art Forces uses community public art and technology, including murals, websites, social and new media, to inspire critical thinking and action. Art Forces moves from the local to the global, from the streets of San Francisco Bay Area to Olympia Washington. to refugee camps of Palestine and Lebanon. The projects make visible histories and relationships that have been obliterated and forgotten; making connections to national and global issues of social justice, borders, precarity, migrations and decolonization.
